When twins Constantine and Zach were born on 30 July 2016, their journey began with uncertainty and critical care.

In their first days of life, the boys were cared for at Westmead ICU and transferred back and forth between the Intensive Care Unit and Grace Centre for Newborn Care as doctors closely monitored their condition. During this time, Constantine underwent surgery to repair a coarctation, while Zach was carefully observed for issues with his stomach as he worked to grow stronger.

Both boys required blood transfusions in those early days, made possible thanks to Humpty Dumpty Foundation-donated capsules and essential medical equipment supporting the hospital team caring for them.

Constantine and Zach needed critical care at birth

For their family, those moments were overwhelming. While many of the faces from that time have blurred with the intensity of those early days, a few names remain unforgettable. Constantine’s cardiologist, Dr Steven Cooper, played a vital role in his care, while Dr Dharmesh Shah supported Zach through those important first stages of his recovery.

Today, nearly nine years later, Constantine and Zach are thriving. Full of energy and personality, the boys love playing soccer, going to school and spending time with their friends. And like any typical nine-year-old boys, they also enjoy getting up to a little bit of mischief along the way.

Their story is a powerful reminder of the impact donor-funded medical equipment can have for sick children and their families during life’s most challenging moments.
