Preventing blindness in premature babies by funding digital retinal cameras for NSW’s busiest Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

Premature babies in NSW are at risk of losing their sight due to Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) - the leading cause of childhood blindness. Yet with early screening and treatment, blindness can often be prevented. 

As more premature babies survive thanks to advances in neonatal care, the demand for eye screening is growing rapidly. But with too few paediatric ophthalmologists available to perform these specialised exams, hospitals are under increasing pressure to ensure every baby receives the care they need.

Humpty's Fight for Sight aims to change this

By funding specialised digital retinal cameras for NSW’s busiest Neonatal Intensive Care Units, clinicians can capture detailed images of a baby’s eyes and share them instantly with specialists for review. This modern model of care allows faster diagnosis, gentler screening for fragile newborns, and earlier treatment when it matters most. Our goal is to fund five digital retinal cameras, helping protect the sight of hundreds of vulnerable babies each year.
